Suzanne Crough, Danny Bonaduce, David Cassidy and Brian Forster, and the cast of The Partridge Family are reuniting on The Today Show as part of the “Great TV Families Reunited” series. Susan Dey (not Susan Day), who played Laurie Partridge, is not part of the reunion. What happened to Susan Dey?

Susan Dey (born Susan Hallock Smith) carried on acting after The Partridge Family, most notably as one of the stars in L.A. Law. Susan Dey’s last acting gig was in Third Watch, filmed in New York. Married to producer Bernard Sofronski, Susan Dey has stayed out of the headlines, meaning she’s avoided the child-celebrity traps of drugs and crime.

New Tennessee coach Derek Dooley reversed a rough start to signing day with switch of wide receiver Da’Rick Rogers, who was pledged to Georgia. The Volunteers had seen J.T. Copeland switch to LSU and lost a battle with USC for Markeith Ambles.

Rogers, who is from Calhoun, Ga., is considered the top player in Georgia and the No. 9 overall recruit in the country by Rivals.com . He follows high school quarterback Nash Nance to Knoxville.

Georgia did get some good news when four-star defensive tackle Mike Thornton from Stone Mountain, Ga., signed with Bulldogs over Kentucky.

Seantrel Henderson, the nation’s top college football recruit flew from Minneapolis to New York on Tuesday to announce which school he has chosen.

On Wednesday, Henderson will announce his long awaited decision about where he will go to school and play football before a nationally-televised audience.

While Henderson’s dad’s already has two letters of intent in hand, the younger Henderson is still agonizing over his decision.

Seantrel Henderson grew up on the north side of Minneapolis and learned to play basketball at North Commons Park.

He played AAU basketball for the Howard Pulley program. Even among the top recruits in the country, Henderson stands out. People who know him think it’s his family keeping him grounded.

CBS College Sports Network will broadcast national signing day, including Henderson’s decision on Wednesday.

Homestead star Darrin Kitchens is making the grades to fulfill a dream

One is to follow in the NFL footsteps of Homestead High graduates Bobby McCray and Eric Foster, defensive ends playing for the Saints and Colts in Sunday’s Super Bowl at Sun Life Stadium. The other is to own his business, or be the CEO of a company.

Both come with the same reward, Kitchens says, and what has driven him to be a good student since an early age: “the chance to take care of his family.”

“I’m not sure when it first popped into my head, probably around middle school,” the 6-3, 215-pound Homestead High senior said of his aspirations. “I guess that’s why I’ve always been so focused on academics. You have to go to college to make both of them happen.”

Kitchens, a safety and receiver as an underclassman, led Miami-Dade County in sacks this season with 19 in only nine games as a defensive tackle and end. He also returned three kickoffs for touchdowns, flashing his 4.5 speed in the 40-yard dash.

But as talented as he is on the field, Kitchens could probably earn a college scholarship on his academics alone. He has a 3.0 grade point average and scored a 21 on his ACT exam as a junior.

Yet, it’s his football future — set to be determined Wednesday morning in his high school library at 9 a.m. — that will decide where Kitchens will go after both of his dreams in college.

“I think what makes him different than most Homestead kids is his personality,” said analyst Charles Fishbein of Elite Scouting Services. “He’s always smiling and in a good mood, which is amazing considering everything he’s been through.

“He’s a very talented athlete I don’t think he’s even come close to his potential yet. He kind of reminds me of [former Hurricane] Tavares Gooden.”

Kitchens, one of only a few talented recruits left in South Florida who has yet to announce a college destination, has whittled down a list of more than 20 offers to finalists Florida and Texas Tech.

“It’s been exciting, but at the same time its been kind of stressful deciding which one is the best fit for me,” Kitchens said. “At Florida, I like the alumni system and how everybody has school spirit and pride. I have an older cousin who goes there and she loves it.

“At Texas Tech, I really enjoyed my visit. I enjoyed the coaches, teammates, the people around town were really friendly. It’s a new environment. I like that. I want the chance to grow up on my own.”

Like most kids in Homestead, his coach Bobby McCray Sr. says, Kitchens comes from a low-income family — and one recently affected by violence and tragedy. Last spring, soon after Kitchens qualified for the state track finals in the 1,600-meter relay, his father, Randy Butler, was shot and killed leaving a convenience store in Homestead.

Kitchens, who lives with his mother and stepfather, said he was only beginning to rekindle a relationship with his dad at the time. He missed most of spring football shortly after, which slowed down his college recruitment. Florida and Texas Tech, though, found their way to Homestead late in his senior season.

“Darrin has always had a great attitude, colleges love that about him. But his father’s death definitely hurt him,” McCray Sr. said. “There aren’t enough fathers in our boys’ lives. As a coach, we’re just a substitute.

“His father’s death motivated Darrin even more to be there for his younger brothers and sisters. He’s hungry more than ever.”

Homestead, a team loaded with juniors according to McCray Sr., will likely have two players sign National Letters of Intent Wednesday. Kitchens and Demetrius Pettway, a 5-10, 170-pound safety, who will decide between Marshall, Western Michigan and Memphis.

McCray is hoping to have three or four more seniors earn athletic or academic scholarships toward college. But Kitchens, he says, has served as a role model to those around him as someone “who will have survived the struggles in Homestead and still achieved their dreams.”

“Every time I’ve come back from one of my trips, I’ve talked to the young guys and told them how they have the opportunity to fight for their chance as well,” Kitchens said.

“I know academics can be a struggle for some of them. But like I tell them, without college the rest of your life will be a struggle. If you want to get out, make it happen.”

Brian Kelly and Notre Dame have received their first seismic boost on Signing Day.

Matt James, a mammoth 6-foot-8, 290-pound offensive lineman ranked as a top 100 national prospect by Rivals.com, has signed with the Irish. James’ official letter of intent arrived at 8:43 a.m. CT on Wednesday, according to the school.

“This was one of those we felt like we really needed,” Irish coach Brian Kelly said after James signed. “The offensive line is a position that clearly needed some strengthening. Matt James is a guy that can come in and physically compete right away. A real good get late in this process.”

James chose Notre Dame over Ohio State and represents the highest-rated talent scored by Kelly thus far. Rivals ranks James as the No. 86 prospect overall nationally.

“It was a really tough decision,” James said, as reported on Cincinnati Enquirer reporter Mike Dyer’s Twitter page. “I like the situation of being in the first class with coach (Brian) Kelly there.”

Notre Dame also received official letters of intent in the last hour from linebacker Kendall Moore and athlete Danny Spond.

He spent his final official visit at Miami and has spoken very highly about Florida.

For weeks, there’s been plenty of speculation about where Miramar receiver Ivan McCartney would choose to play college football.

Wednesday morning, the U.S. Army All-American made it official and signed with West Virginia.

McCartney, who helped lead Miramar to the Class 6A state football championship, was one of the few players in South Florida who opted to wait until National Signing Day to announce his college plans.

The 6-foot-2, 175-pound McCartney was a Sun Sentinel first-team All-County selection after making 37 catches for 747 yards with 10 touchdowns.

Brandon Gainer shocker: Signs with Kentucky over UCF

Miami Central RB Brandon Gainer pulled off a National Signing Day shocker, signing with Kentucky over UCF, according to rivals.com.

Gainer appeared to be leaning toward UCF after visiting the school during the weekend before signing day. Earlier in the morning, new UCF QB Blake Bortles predicted Gainer would be a Knight.

Bortles was clearly wrong.

There had been much speculation earlier in the week about where Gainer would be headed. On Monday, Miami Central coach Telley Lockett had to back off his statement that Gainer had committed to UCF.

The Knights are still awaiting word on Jose Jose, though the St. Pete Times is reporting that Lockett told the newspaper the player was walking around with a USF hat on. But Lockett has proven to be an unreliable source, so we won’t know until someone confirms they have received a letter of intent from Jose.

Carnes changes course, signs with NU

And it’s a good one for the Huskers.

Brion Carnes, the quarterback prospect from Manatee High School in Bradenton, Fla., shocked most everyone on Wednesday morning when he signed with the Huskers.

Carnes had been committed to Western Kentucky since the weekend. Why the change?

“Just the atmosphere,” Carnes told the Journal Star. “Just the fact this is Nebraska. My goals and dreams are to push for a BCS national championship, try to contend for a Heisman Trophy. I feel like I can do that at Nebraska.”

Carnes signed with the Huskers at 8 a.m. (CST) after thinking and praying about it a lot on Tuesday night.

He is the second cousin of Tommie Frazier, but Carnes said “my decision was based on my decision.”

Added Carnes: “I talk to Tommie all the time. While I was here at Manatee, he told me it was going to be a tough road to go through. And it was. I was going through this and that. I didn’t know where I was going to be. I prayed about it. I put it in God’s hands.”

Chris Conboy, Carnes’ quarterback coach at Manatee, said Carnes had a good rapport with Husker coach Bo Pelini and offensive coordinator Shawn Watson, and liked the support of the fans and people around the program.

“It was a combination of all those things,” Conboy said.

Carnes laughed and said he’d have to get used to the cold Nebraska weather. But he was glad to have this process behind him.

His phone has been ringing off the hook for weeks now.

“It was crazy but I talked it over with my mom and we prayed about it,” he said. “This is where the Lord led me.”
